Laura was born in the Old Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, April 14, 1932. The oldest child of the late Violet (Nichols) and Harold Basford. Laura spent the first sixteen years of her life, growing up and going to school in James River. Moving to New Glasgow at the age of 16, she began work at Mccarron’s Coffee Pot, where she met her husband Mack of 62 years. Laura was an instrument­al part of M. D. Holmes Trucking Limited for over 50 years, in which she took great pride. Her family meant so much to her and she worked very hard to raise them. She received great pleasure from watching her grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren grow up. Laura was a member of Silver Light Rebekah Lodge # 79, Hopewell for over 50 years, and a recipient of the Decoration of Chivalry, Past President of District Associatio­n of the Atlantic Provinces, Past President of Rebekah Assembly. She also served as the President of the Maritime Odd Fellows Home, Pictou, and was a strong supporter of the home. She was a member of First Presbyteri­an Church, Stellarton for over 50 years, the Ladies Guild and a life member of the Maclellan Fraser A.M.S. Laura was predecease­d by her husband Mack of 62 years, in Sept. 2012 and a sister Winnifred of Tangier. She is survived by her daughters Diane (David) Cameron, Dartmouth; Frances (John) Macquarrie, Lorne; Sheila Holmes, Wolfville; sons, Chester (Frances), Riverton; Donald (Thelma), Riverton; grandchild­ren Amelia (Ryan) Ivey, Maggie (Richard) Fowler, Jenny (Trevor) Mackenzie, Brad Macquarrie (Ashley), Ethan (Jennifer) Macdonald, Alana Macdonald (Rob Green), Blake Macdonald, Trevor (Jenny) Holmes, Shawna (Jeff) Wallace, Jamie Holmes, Jason (Alicia)o ’donnell and 15 great-grandchild­ren. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Visitation will be from 1-2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 4 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 4 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow with Rev. Charles Mcpherson officiatin­g. A reception will follow in the funeral home. Burial will be in Heatherdal­e Memorial Gardens at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to the Maritime Odd Fellows Home in Pictou or a charity of your choice.
