King’s, MSVU capture hoop titles

Jenna Bain scored 21 points as the King's College Blue Devils downed the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics 81-67 to capture the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n women's basketball championsh­ip on Sunday in Charlottet­own.

Bain was good on five of six three-point attempts. Andrea Hebert added 18 points and Lindsay Black 11 in the win.

Amanda Pearcey scored 21 for the Mystics while Menna Mccabe had 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The Blue Devils will represent the conference at the CCAA championsh­ip on March 13-16 in Lloydmoins­ter, Alta.

In the men's championsh­ip game, Jaydan Smith poured in 31 points as the Mystics edged the St. Thomas Tommies 91-90 in a thrilling overtime game.

Adam Callaghan added 16 points for the Mystics and Jaxon Smith 11. Noah Mccarthy had 31 for St. Thomas.

The Mystics advance to the CCAA championsh­ip, March 13-16 at Mount Allison University.

ACAA AWARDS

Alexa Rancourt (Holland College) was named the women's player of the year. Other award winners were Paige Leblanc (St. Thomas) as the top rookie, Kylee Roi (St. Thomas) as the top defensive player, Thomas Skabar (Mount Allison) as the coach of the year and Celine Sterckel (St. Thomas) Rod Shoveller Memorial Awar recipient.

Mystics' Nikki Arsenault, Nalini Maharaj and Amanda Pearcey were all named firstteam all-stars, along with Holland College's Lauren Armstrong and Alexa Rancourt.

Women's second-team all-stars were Jenna Bain (King's College), Leblanc and Sterckel (St. Thomas) and Jillian Mumford and Reese Nowlan (Mount Allison).

Geoffrey Lavoie (St. Thomas) was chosen as the men's player of the year, while Tim Ellison (Mount Allison) was the top defensive player, Tariq Armstrong (Mount Allison) the top rookie and Paul Vaughan (UNBSJ) the coach of the year.

The men's first-team all-stars were Chase Tynes (MSVU), Bryce Corless (Holland College), Tim Ellison (Mount Allison) and Geoffrey Lavoie and Noah Mccarthy (St. Thomas).

Mystics' Jaydan Smith and Jaxon Smith were named to the second all-star team, with UNBSJ'S Jack Fury-miller and Ethan Szemerda and Marc Hofer (Crandall).
