MACLEAN, Joyce Lorraine

With very heavy hearts the family of Joyce Maclean announce her sudden passing at age 93. She was born in Springhill, NS on December 3, 1930, the younger daughter of the late Harold N. and Winnifred L. (Isenor) Soley She is survived by her daughter, Ann (Robert) Macdiarmid, Moncton; and her son, Stuart (Carole), Dartmouth; her grandchildren, Kirk Macdiarmid (Morgan Houston), Hammonds Plains; Kristen Macdiarmid (Iain Mclaren), Halifax; Caeleigh Maclean (Will Haggerty), Currys Corner, NS and Kerry Maclean (Molly Christiansen), Grand Lake, NS; and two great-grandsons, Lachlan and Findlay Haggerty. She always enjoyed visits from her family, including their dogs. She is also survived by two nephews and two nieces. She was predeceased by her sister Carol (Frank) Hunter. Joyce graduated in 1950 from the three year Applied Arts Program at Mount Allison University. After graduation, she was employed by the Nova Scotia Handcraft Guild and taught weaving in many communities throughout Nova Scotia. In 1953 she married Brian Maclean and moved to Ottawa where they lived until moving to Dartmouth in 1966. Joyce enjoyed baking, always making sure there was an ample supply of cookies in her cookie jar. The family favourite was her brown “circle” bread. She was active her entire life, starting when she was a child skating on the oval her father built around the entire house in Springhill, and swimming at the family cottage at Heather Beach. Joyce had a passion for curling. She was past president of the Dartmouth Day Ladies Curling Club and was an Honourary Life Member. She was an instructor for new members and volunteered with the youth curling program when her children were junior curlers and then again when her grandchildren joined Little Rocks. She represented Nova Scotia at the Canadian Seniors Curling Championship. She retired from active curling at age 90. She was an avid curling fan, watching the Scotties and Brier on TV and following the scores online from whichever bonspiel her children or grandchildren were curling in. Joyce volunteered with the IWK auxiliary and the Dartmouth General Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She was also a member of St. James United Church in Dartmouth. Joyce valued the friendships she had at Parkland Kinross Hall as well as with her monthly lunch dates with friends and her bridge club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation or Souls Harbour Mission. Arrangements have been made for visitation at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St, Dartmouth from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 19 with a service at the same location at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20.
