It is with broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Charles Russell Clarke, CD, at the age of 99, a few days shy from his 100th birthday, at Highcrest Nursing home in Springhill, NS. Born March 19, 1924, in Hastings, NS, he was a son of the late Charles L. and Edna (Long) Clarke. Russell attended school in Amherst and resided there except for four years during the Second Word War when he served with 35Bty, Ist LAA Regiment and HQ First Canadian Army and 2nd Echelon, in Canada the United Kingdom and North West Europe. He later served with the North Nova Scotia Highlander­s. Russell worked at Dunlap Brothers Hardware for 44 years. He served on the Board of the Highland View Regional Hospital, Amherst Regional High School and the Cumberland Regional Vocational School. He was a past member of Acacia Lodge #8, AF & AM and a 3rd degree member of the Scottish Rite in Halifax. He was also a member of Trinity-st. Stephen’s United Church. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughter, Christine Clarke, Edmonton, AB, Leslie Ann Clarke, Liverpool, NS; daughter-in-law, Angela Clarke, Sydney; Sister, Anne Smith, Halifax, NS; seven grandchild­ren, Chris, Luke, Hannah, Aynsley, Paige, Alexandra and Tony; 12 great-grandchild­ren; great friend, Ian; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family. Besides his parents Russell was predecease­d by his wife, Barbara Clarke (Baird); son, Tom; brothers, Chester, Gerald, Garnet, Bill, Peter, and Kenneth; half-brother, Randolph and one sister, Grace in infancy. Russell’s remains are resting at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst with visitation on Sunday, March 17, from 7 – 9 p.m. Cremation to follow. Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 18 at 4 p.m. with Rev. Susan Gamblin officiatin­g from Campbell’s Funeral Home Chapel. Russell will be laid to rest beside his wife, Barbara at later date. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial donations in Russell’s memory may be made to the IWK or a charity of your choice.
