It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of Ramsay Mitchell Scott Armitage on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the age of 92. He resided in Grand Barachois, N.B., having lived in Riverview, N.B. for many years. Born in Halifax, N.S. he was the son of the late Rhody and Geraldine (Mitchell) Armitage. He is survived by his daughter Anne of Braeside, ON; sons David (Jeannette) of Grand Barachois, Ronald (Sandra) of Fredericton, and Daniel (Lynn) of Riverview; grandchildren Ryan, Jill, Vanessa, Jana, and Alicia; greatgrandchildren Landon and Hannah; and sister-in-law Eileen (Kempton) Andrews of Calgary, Alberta. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Alice (Kempton) Armitage, and sister Gereene (Armitage) Simard. He began his career with the CNR in Halifax in 1949. After serving nine years in the Traffic/sales Dept. of CNR he accepted a position with the Maritime Provinces Transportation Commission in Moncton, N.B. (subsequently changed to the Atlantic Provinces Transportation Commission). During his tenure of 38 years with the Commission he assumed various positions leading to his appointment as General Manager in 1988. Throughout his transportation career, he prepared, authored and participated in various transportation studies and reports with the objective of enhancing the competitive positions of manufacturers and producers in Atlantic Canada. He appeared before parliamentary committees and commissions of inquiry relating to transportation. Ramsay was a Director and a member of Transportation Committees of over twenty regional and national business organizations. Some examples include various trade organizations and Chambers of Commerce throughout the Atlantic Provinces, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Transpiration Committee, the Canadian Shippers Council (as Vice Chairman), and the Maritime Regional Advisory Council (port matters), and The Maritime Lumber Bureau. In 1991, he received a National Transportation “Award of Achievement" and the following year, the “Transportation Person" annual award presented by the Transportation Club of Moncton. Ramsay’s passion was his family. Weekends were always spent with kids in tow: summers in an unairconditioned car for a day at the beach, winters on the backyard skating rink. He was also a keen fisherman and his many fishing excursions with friends and family highlighted his years. At Ramsay's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A family burial will take place at a later date. In Ramsay's memory, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross or a charity of the donor's choice.
