It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Marg Harper. Marg passed peacefully on March 25, 2024, with her beloved husband Reg by her side - just three weeks short of her 100th birthday. Born in Halifax on April 16, 1924, she was the eldest daughter of Cornelius and Hannah (Foley) Leahy. Marg lived a long, wonderful, full life. She grew up in Halifax and Chester in a loving family with her 2 sisters and a brother. Her life took a turn when her father died, and she had to leave school early to go to work to help support her family. A very smart and vivacious young woman, she was employed by the government and over the years built a successful career as a financial manager, retiring from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Like many of her generation, World War 2 had a big impact on her life and she and her family participated in the war effort by supporting the troops in Chester. Marg would say that her greatest success in life was marrying her handsome, young electrician, Reg in 1957. From the time they met, she was “it” for him and he was “it” for her. Their marriage lasted 66 years. They were there for each other through thick and thin. They built a beautiful life together, living in central Halifax where they had many friends and the best of neighbours. When they retired, they spent wonderful years at their cottage at Lake Mush a Mush, where family and friends were always welcome and cherished memories were made. They also traveled together, and Marg always said her favorite trip was when they went to Ireland with her brother Bill and sister-in-law Helen. Marg loved her family and had close relationships with them all. Even as she neared the end of her life, she spoke daily with her sister Betty. She was close with her inlaws. She had many nieces and nephews who loved her and she was especially close to “her girls”...her nieces with whom she developed a special bond. Marg’s life was enriched by her stepson, Paul and his family who played a pivotal role in her life. Marg is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Reginald Harper; stepson, Paul (Catherine) Newman; grandchildren, Laura and Matthew; sister, Elizabeth Sampson; sister-in-law, Helen Leahy; brothers-inlaw, Tommy (Marg) Harper, Carl (Bessy) Harper, Jimmy (Judy) Harper and Ivan Harper. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister in infancy; sister, Mary Ching; brother, William Leahy; first husband, Lawrence Feader; brothersin-law, Clyde Sampson, George Ching, Bobby Harper; and sister-in-law, Chrissy Harper. Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Wednesday, April 3 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at St. Agnes Church, Mumford Road on Thursday, April 4 at 11 a.m. with reception to follow in the church hall.
