KELLY, Morton

-

Morton Kelly - a pillar of strength and warmth in the hearts of many, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on March 27, 2024. His life was one of love, dedication, and unwavering commitment, and he leaves behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his extensive family and the many whose lives he touched.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on January 31, 1929, Morton embodied resilience and compassion from the very start. The eldest of 14 children, he began working at an early age delivering fresh fish and groceries on his bicycle before school and later honed his work ethic during long hours on a fish truck, with the family business N.C. Kelly and Sons.

In 1953, Morton embarked on a new chapter of his life as he moved to Bedford with his wife, Iris (Payne). Together for 43 years, they raised a family of nine children with love, laughter, and an abundance of memories. Morton's devotion to his family knew no bounds, and his role as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather brought him immeasurable joy.

Simultaneously, in 1963, Morton pursued a successful career in the insurance industry, joining New York Life and later Canada Life. His dedication and expertise earned him widespread recognition among his peers and numerous awards such as a member of Post Senior NYLIC and the Million Dollar Round Table. Morton's passion for his work was matched only by his genuine care for the wellbeing of others. He guided countless individuals and families toward financial security and peace of mind.

At the age of 75, Morton retired from the insurance industry. Retirement did not diminish his zest for life; at this time, he married his newfound sweetheart Madeline (Mackay), and enjoyed their home in Windsor Junction, extensive travel together, more time tending to his garden, and sharing cherished moments with his ever-expanding family. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are all a testament to his boundless love and enduring legacy.

Morton’s giving was not limited to his family, friends, and clients. He worked tirelessly for many volunteer organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, the Ostomy of Canada Association, and St. Ignatius Catholic Parish in Bedford as a member of the parish council, a Eucharistic minister, and Knights of Columbus. He also campaigned in many municipal, provincial, and federal elections. His kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Morton is survived by his wife, Madeline Mackaykelly; his children, Ken Kelly (Sherry), Joanne Kelly-dwinell (Raymond), Peter Kelly (Diana), Ann Marie Hubley-scott (Charles), Robert Kelly (Brenda), Andre Kelly (Anita), Mark Kelly (Tanya); and stepchildren, Tim Mackay (Shelly) and Allana Milburn (Darren); siblings, Gordon, Russell, Alice, Patsy, Donald, Marie and Doris; also 25 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Morton was predeceased by his parents, Nathaniel and Vivian Kelly (Kenefick); his first wife, Iris Kelly (Payne); his son, John Kelly (Lori); his daughter, Ruth Anne Kottwitz (Lutz); and his siblings, Eric C., Everett, Eric N., Allan, Carl, and Kenneth.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation and thanks to the many doctors, nurses, and multiple support staff within the QEII Halifax Infirmary and VG sites, and IMCU unit for their compassionate care for Morton during his final weeks.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. The funeral service will be held at St. Ignatius Church in Bedford, on April 5, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow at the parish hall, where family and friends will gather to celebrate and remember the remarkable life of Morton Kelly.
