Gateway expansion moves forward
Plus new post office building in Dartmouth and grocery store for Head of Jeddore
Anyone who has stood in line outside of Gateway Meat Market in Westphal will be pleased to know the expansion passed its first test.
The Harbour East — Marine Drive Community Council voted on Thursday night to initiate the approval process and schedule a public hearing.
Owners Tamara and Jamey Selig posted on Facebook this week that the hearing will be May 2 and encouraged customers to support them.
“If you’re ready for more shopping space, more cash registers, a better flow, improved parking lot, a covered and heated awning … please feel free to show your support.”
It is the fifth expansion since they opened in 2008 and it will be adjacent to the current building to avoid interruptions as much as possible.
It will be a two-storey addition with a covered pedestrian walkway to a new front entrance to the building.
Open when other bigger grocery stores are closed and known for offering better deals, Tamara told the Chronicle Herald last summer that business is booming.
“We’ve been steadily growing over the years but ever since – I would say January – when inflation went through the roof, we got a lot busier really fast, quicker than we could keep up with,” said co-owner Tamara Selig on Tuesday. “So, very quickly, we started with all the steps needed to put towards the next expansion.”
YE OLD POST OFFICE
A developer’s plan to add a glass tower on top of a restored historic post office in Dartmouth also moved ahead on Thursday.
RHAD Architects, on behalf of property owner James Lawley, has applied to HRM to build The Post, a mixeduse, 26-storey residential tower with townhomes and commercial spaces. It would have 142 residential units.
The plan is to restore and make some changes to the original 1914 building.
The committee voted to give notice of motion to consider the proposed development agreement and schedule a public hearing.
HEAD OF JEDDORE GROCERY STORE
Many residents of the Head of Jeddore will be happy to know the development agreement to build a new, larger grocery store in their community was approved on Thursday night.
WSP, on behalf of Metlink Investments Limited, applied to build a 15,780-square-foot grocery store off of Highway 7. The smaller Sobeys in the nearby plaza will close and move into the new, bigger space as a Foodland.
Coun. David Hendsbee (Preston - Chezzetcook - Eastern Shore) said the community is “very anxious” to see a new, larger store with more selection and that construction crews are ready to get going on it.
FIVE STOREYS IN DARTMOUTH
The committee also gave the green light on a development agreement for a fivestorey residential building with ground-floor commercial space at 541 Pleasant Street.
There is an HRM requirement that a minimum of 20 per cent of the units must have two or more bedrooms and it will have underground parking.
