Selects win third straight female title

The three-peat is complete for the Northern Subway Selects.

The Selects, representi­ng Nova Scotia, claimed their third consecutiv­e Atlantic under-18 female AAA hockey title by defeating the Eastern Stars of P.E.I. 5-2 in the championsh­ip game in Corner Brook, N.L.

Kendall Doiron and Kate Morrow scored first-period goals for the Selects before Emily Gardiner and Abigail Dingwell responded in the second for the Stars. Laci Boyd’s unassisted marker 6:21 into the third broke the 2-2 deadlock. Brooke Williams and Halirose Maclean added emptynet goals to seal the victory.

Netminder Jorja Burrows turned aside 28 shots for the win.

The Selects punched their ticket to the final by blanking the Western Flames 4-0 Saturday afternoon behind Doiron’s two goals.

The Stars came into Sunday’s championsh­ip having won all four of their round-robin games, including a 1-0 decision over the Selects on Friday afternoon.

The Selects will travel to British Columbia later this month representi­ng the Atlantic region in the 2024 Esso Cup national championsh­ip, April 21-27 in Vernon.

ATLANTIC UNDER-18 MALE AAA

Kensington went wild on the Halifax Mcdonalds in Sunday’s gold medal game at the Atlantic under-18 AAA championsh­ip in Lantz.

Matt Mcdonald netted a hat trick and Ethan Dickson had a goal and three assists as the Kensington Wild of P.E.I. pounded the reigning Nova Scotia U18 Major Hockey League champions 10-0 at the East Hants Sportsplex.

Derek Andrews added a goal and a pair of assists and Isaac Taweel tallied twice for the Wild, who finished the preliminar­ies at 3-0-1, one point ahead of Halifax (3-1-0).

George Gallant stopped all 43 shots he faced in the Kensington goal.

The Wild will represent the Atlantic region at the Telus Cup under-18 national championsh­ip, April 22-28 at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre in Cape Breton. The Sydney Rush are the host team.
