Jordan Dumais, the Halifax Mooseheads’ all-time leading scorer, chose not to be present for his arraignment Tuesday on drunk-driving charges, letting a lawyer appear on his behalf.

Dumais, 19, faces two charges from a traffic stop on Brunswick Street in Halifax on March 1 at about 2:20 a.m. – impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit of .08.

Lawyer Jack Macdonald told a Halifax provincial court judge he had just received the disclosure package of evidence from the Crown and requested that the case be adjourned for about a month so the material can be reviewed.

Prosecutor Nick Comeau informed the court the Crown is proceeding summarily on the charges. That means a conviction, providing there are no aggravating factors such as a crash or a breathalyzer reading of .120 or higher, would likely carry a $1,000 fine and a one-year prohibition on driving anywhere in Canada.

Judge Ann Marie Simmons scheduled the case to return to court May 9 for pleas.

Macdonald had no comment about the matter as he left the courthouse.

News of the charges broke March 15, when the Mooseheads announced they and the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League had jointly suspended Dumais for five games.

The suspension covered the Mooseheads’ last four regular-season games and Game 1 of their first-round playoff series against the Bathurst Titan.

Dumais, a winger from Longueuil, Que., came back from the 2024 world junior championship in Sweden with a sports hernia that required surgery in January.

He was expected to return for Game 2 of the playoffs, but the Mooseheads announced he would remain sidelined with a new longterm injury.

Bathurst went on to sweep the series in four games.

Dumais was picked in the third round of the National Hockey League’s 2022 entry draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has 325 career points with the Mooseheads, including 47 points in 21 games this season.

In 2022-2023, Dumais led the QMJHL in scoring, collecting 54 goals and 86 assists for 140 points, and was named the league’s most valuable player.

His last game with Halifax this season was Dec. 8, just before he left to play for Canada’s world junior team.
