REDDEN (Cruickshank), Dorothy Mabel

-

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Nana, G-nana, and aunt, who passed away on April 28, 2024, in Windsor, Nova Scotia. The daughter of the late Samuel and Lenora (Tully) Cruickshank, she was born April 5, 1930, in Stewiacke, NS. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love, and fond memories for all who knew her.

Dot began her teaching career at the age of 18 in a two-room schoolhouse in rural Hants County. A short time later, she met the love of her life, Clarence Redden, when he purchased her pie at the school fundraiser. They were married and spent 52 wonderful years living a very full life. She was proud to support her husband and son as they grew the family hardware business through 63 years of Redden ownership. Together they had three children: Ardith (Laurie) Haley, Gaspereau; Jeff (Joanne) Redden, Wolfville; and Garth (Jo-ann) Redden, Falmouth. Dot was also blessed with six grandchildren: Tyler (Cheryl) Haley, Harvey, NB.; Bevan (Daniel) Sequeira, Halifax; Drew (Jacqueline) Redden, Wolfville; Jill (Jordan) Matheson, Wolfville; Michael (Megan) Redden, Stewiacke; and Luke Redden, Inverness; and nine greatgrandchildren: Dean and Declan Haley, Izzy Sequeira, Walker and Georgie Redden, Grey and Wells Mathison, and Grace and Sophie Redden. Dot was predeceased by her husband, Clarence; and her sister, Joyce Cameron.

Throughout her life, Dot engaged in several volunteer pursuits. She was passionate about her work with Windsor United Church Women’s group and graciously donated her time and efforts to community fundraising events and organizations. An avid knitter, Dot joyfully created multiple projects for every member of her family and beyond.

Dot was a caring and supportive Mum and loved staying home to raise her children. Together with Clarence, they provided a happy, safe, and nurturing environment for their loved ones. She later returned to the classroom, to continue in the profession she loved. Affectionately known as Nana (by far, her favourite role), Dot’s grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she relished in each of their successes. She enjoyed spoiling them on shopping trips, attending their sports events and graduations, and getting to know their friends (who also called her “Nana ”). In her later years, nothing brought her more happiness than watching her grandchildren become parents, and spending time with her great-grandchildren. Her willingness to be teased, her unwavering good nature, and her delicious chocolate chip cookies will always be remembered.

We are so grateful to have had her as our guiding light and are comforted to know that she is now reunited with her beloved Clarence.

We would like to thank Windsor Elms for the amazing care she received over the past seven years. The devoted staff ensured her comfort and quality of life were maintained to the end of her time there. We are so grateful for their kindness, cheerfulness, and love for her.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lindsay Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor, NS, B0N 2T0.

The family will host a visitation at Lindsay’s Funeral Home in Windsor, from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1. A celebration of Dot’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, in Windsor United Church, followed by a reception in the church hall.
