During his time in the Navy, Bruce spent nine months aboard the HMCS Terra Nova as a Hull Technician during the first Gulf War. Beyond his military career, Bruce was deeply involved in community organizations such as the Royal Canadian Legion and the Masonic Lodge. He was president of the Legion, Branch 72, in Great Village, from 2005 to 2006. He was also a 3rd degree Master Mason at the North Star Masonic Lodge in Londonderry.
