It is with great sadness that the family of Roderick Byron Atkinson MacLean, age 80 of Amherst, announces his passing on Saturday, November 30, 2019 in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, with his loving family by his side. Born in Amherst, Rod was a son of the late Clyde and Kathleen (Atkinson) Mac-Lean. Rod attended Rothesay Netherwood School and achieved many awards for his athletic abilities. He worked with his father at MacLean Insurance and then joined with Amherst Insurance. He became a pilot at age 51, owned his own Cessna, and enjoyed flying with his friends and family. Rod had many hobbies, hunting and fishing were two of his favourites. You could find him playing hockey and softball in fun leagues. He loved quality time with his family and friends at the cottage and loved spending time on the water. Rod truly enjoyed time with his grandchild­ren. Rod will be missed by his wife, Susan; children, Krista Leigh (Peter) Nixon and Richard (Joy) MacLean, both of Amherst; grandchild­ren, Marilyn, Hannah, Mitchell and Max; sister, Mary Lee (Craig) Fry of Bedford; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Rod was predecease­d by his former wife, Marilyn VanSnick. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902) 667-9906. A celebratio­n of Rod’s life will take place on Thursday, December 5th, between the hours of 2-5 p.m. held in Heartz Hall, Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church, at 1 Ratchford St., Amherst. A private graveside service will take place in Amherst Cemetery. Memorial contributi­ons in Rod’s memory can be made to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre Palliative Care or the Cumberland Cancer Assistance Fund.
