MANZER, Ian Robert
The family of Ian Robert Manzer of Santa Monica, Calif., son of Audrey Manzer and the late Turney C. Manzer of Dartmouth, are devastated to announce that he passed away peacefully, after a short illness, with family by his side, on December 3, 2019, at UCLA Medical Centre in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 50 years of age. Ian was born and grew up in Dartmouth. Educated in Dartmouth schools and at Dalhousie University, he attained a BSc (Physics), an Engineering Diploma and an MBA. He later earned advanced qualifications in Computer Technology and certification in Project Management. Fifteen years ago, he moved to Santa Monica, Calif., where he met and married the love of his life, Robin Nussbaum of Los Angeles. They enjoyed 11 happy years together. Their latest visit to Nova Scotia was a year ago, to attend the wedding of Ian’s niece, Robin; a happy, family reunion. Ian was a devoted amateur athlete. He was a member of the Old Scotia Highland Games Heavyweights Team for a number of years, played Lacrosse, was a practitioner of the Martial Arts and paddled, swam and enjoyed the many activities of summer at Banook Canoe Club. He was a gifted self-taught mechanic, at one time having built from scratch a working half ton truck, using scrounged spare parts. Ian cared deeply about home and family, Nova Scotia, being Canadian, his many friends on both coasts, environmental conservation, dogs and cats, Santa Monica Beach and Big Dean’s, and especially his wife Robin. Ian is survived by his loving mother, "Ma"; and his devoted wife, Robin. He is also survived by his older siblings, Alison (Trevor Williams), Heather (Marcel Maessen), Isobel (Lance Gifford), Gordon and Aileen (Jerry Patterson); nephews, Willem Maessen, Connor Maessen, Jamie Gifford, Brian De La Franier; and nieces, Laura Maessen, Amy De La Franier, Kate Gifford, Robin Lake and Meredith Patterson, to whom he was devoted. He was always their cool uncle. He will be sorely missed and always remembered by his loving family. A Celebration of Life will be held in Dartmouth at a later date, at a time convenient for his wife to join us from California. Ian’s family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation for the warm wishes and support shown by those who knew and loved him. Donations in memory of Ian may be made to the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia, Bide A While Animal Shelter or a charity of choice.
