WELD, Margaret May "Peggy"

-

Of Halifax. Our beloved Memaw left us on December 13, 2019, how grateful we are for her life and how profoundly blessed our lives were made through her. Born in Halifax on April 13, 1932, Peggy was the eldest of six to Estella May (Dowell) and Robert Fraser. The family included siblings, Muriel, Bobby, Peter, Joy, Janet and Jane. They lived in Bedford with Peggy finishing her schooling at Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax. On her way to her B.A. and B.Ed. at Dalhousie she made strong and lasting friendships. Most significantly at her first Dal freshman event she stole the heart of a tall Engineering student, her beloved Gordon whom she married in 1956. Their first married years were spent in England where she taught school and they welcomed their first child, Elizabeth. Busy days followed raising their four children Elizabeth, Elaine, Robert and Patty with wonderful care and tenderness. Peggy also was very active in volunteer work. Her many activities included President of the Volunteer Help-Line, President of the Junior League of Halifax, Coordinator of the initial Provincial Volunteer Week which continues to this day, and serving on the YWCA Board. Much time was also spent volunteering at Dalhousie University, including President of the Alumni Association and Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors for which she was recognized in 1998 with the Archibald Award for her outstanding service. Mum and Dad welcomed John, Angela and David into our family and all seven grandchildren who followed: Jeffrey, Thomas, Gordon, Elizabeth, Tineke, Jenna and Patrick. They had a deep and strong marriage with a quiet understanding that a life that matters is made better with togetherness. Their loving commitment to one another drew a wide circle of family and friends and their open door policy resulted in many happy and memorable visits. Their happy holidays included skiing, interesting travel and particularly bareboat chartering in the Caribbean which often included their friends Elise and Larry Doane and Barb and Johan Koppernaes. The happy times on board the family boats were incredibly special to all of us. Memaw embraced boating and became a confident and solid first mate with Gordon including voyages to the St. Lawrence River, the Saint John River, New York, and Florida. Picture Peggy on the swimboard of our yacht Grampus with her feet in the water in the late-day sun knowing her children were close and good friends were nearby - she simply shone. Memaw, with your face turned to the sun, may you be welcomed into the eternal light and may your late daughter Dr. Elizabeth Weld, guide you on your way. We love you and will forever embrace your memory. Peggy is survived by her husband Gordon and their family, Elaine and John Himmelman, Rob and Angela Weld, Patty and David Viscount; and grandchildren, Jeffrey (Charlotte), Thomas (Charlotte), Gordon (Britney), Elizabeth (Cliff), Tineke, Jenna and Patrick. Also surviving are her siblings, Muriel (Payzant), Bobby, Peter, Joy (Harwood), Janet (Edstrom), and Jane (Fredericks) and her many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held in Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1340 Cathedral Lane, on Wednesday, December 18th at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow. Online condolences may be sent to J.A. Snow Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial gift might consider the Dr. Elizabeth Catherine Weld Memorial Bursary, Faculty of Medicine (902-494-8801) or a charity of your choice.
