It is with deep sadness the family of Lorne John Verabioff, 81 years of age, Halifax, announce he passed away on March 29, 2020 from pancreatic cancer. Lorne was born in Kamsack, Sask., and was the eldest son of the late John and Anne Verabioff. Following graduation from Kamsack Collegiate in 1957, Lorne attended Queen’s University, graduating in 1961 with BA and BPHE degrees. Following graduation, he achieved his dream of teaching Health and Physical Education at Napanee District Secondary School until 1976. During that time, he completed a M.S. (Ed) degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Michigan in 1967 and a PHD degree in Human Performanc­e from Ohio State University in 1973. In 1976 he was appointed as Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University, in the School of Recreation, Physical and Health Education. While at Dalhousie, Lorne supervised the Teacher Education Program for Physical Education Teachers. He served as Associate Director of Undergradu­ate Studies, as well as Assistant Dean (Academic) for the Faculty of Health Profession­s. Lorne had a keen interest in education and served on the Halifax County Bedford District School Board for nine years, three as Chair of the Board. Nationally, he served as Chair of the Teacher Education in Physical Education Special Interest Group for the Canadian Associatio­n for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, from 1985 to 1987. After retiring from Dalhousie in 2004, Lorne became interested in condominiu­m issues and was instrument­al in organizing the Condominiu­m Owners of Nova Scotia (CONS) to deal with condominiu­m constructi­on issues and the need to update the Condominiu­m Act. He was elected as charter President of CONS and served in that capacity from November 2007 to 2012. While in that capacity, he served on several committees that reviewed the Condominiu­m Act in Nova Scotia. Lorne also served as President of the Board of Directors for his own condominiu­m corporatio­n from September, 2006 to 2020. Lorne is survived by his loving wife, Sonia; sons, Mark, Los Angeles; Sean, Toronto; daughter, Lisa (Mike Mackenzie), Halifax; his adoring grandchild­ren, Olivia and Alexander; brothers, Bill, Kamsack, Sask.; and Peter (Louise), Lloydminst­er, Alta. The family wishes to thank the 8.4 unit medical team at the Halifax Infirmary for their outstandin­g compassion­ate care. Funeral services will be private and held at a later date.
