Age 82 of Halifax, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2020 in QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Pearman and Elizabeth (Haleron) Slaunwhite. She was predecease­d by her husband Kenneth Brown in 1998. After marrying Ken in St. Mary’s Basilica in Halifax, "Lizzie’s Joycie" could often be found in her early years playing bingo at Buddy’s Canteen in Terence Bay. She brought joy to thousands of Haligonian­s as the technical operator of Nova Scotia Light & Power’s "Fantasylan­d" Christmas display in the Capitol Theatre for many years, before also working at Province House and Sears Canada. Joyce then made a career at Dalhousie University, retiring after 30 years as supervisor of Book Bindery in 1997. She was an avid bowler at the Bayers Road bowling alley, and a long-time volunteer at Northwood Manor and St. Vincent’s Guest House. Her happiest moments were spent listening to her talented sons playing the guitar, always eager to sing along. Joyce was especially proud of her grandchild­ren whom she loved dearly. Every Christmas, her family would look forward to her famous "Five Pound Cake". She is survived by sons, Kenneth and wife Leslie of Bedford; Stephen (Jug) and wife Suzanne of Dartmouth; Howard and wife Janet, Karl and wife Belinda both of Halifax; grandchild­ren, Katie, Lyndsay, Matthew, Christophe­r, Michael, Geordie and Kahlie; great-grandchild­ren, Evelyn and Cohen. Besides her husband Ken, she was predecease­d by her sister, Shirley (Bill) Redmond (Ottawa); brothers, Stanley and Robert Slaunwhite (both of Halifax): and sister, Bernice in infancy. Cremation has taken place. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Mass will be celebrated in Joyce’s memory in St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, Halifax at a later date. Donations can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Atlantic Division or Canadian Cancer Society.
