Of Herring Cove, passed away peacefully at home April 29, 2020 with family members by his side. Born in Halifax May 9, 1926 he was the eldest son of the late Ansle Patrick Dempsey and Catherine Dempsey (Power). He is survived by wife, Laura Dempsey (Fraser) of 65 years; daughters, Anne Warren (Peter), Marian (Glen), Catherine Brown (Tim), Lois West (Mike), Ellen; sons, Edward (Lana), Matthew (Carla), Fraser (Laurel); 20 grandchild­ren; 13 great-grandchild­ren. Also survived by brothers, Ansle (Barb), Joseph (Julie), Dennis (Barb); sisters, Doreen Reardon, Rosie Dempsey, Angela Arsenault, Shirley Kerr, Cathy (Fred Macdonald) and sister-inlaw, Doreen Dempsey; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Predecease­d by daughter, Janice; brothers, Jeremiah, Patrick (Lillian), Raymond (Violet); sister, Mary (Doug Purcell); brothers-inlaw, Bill Reardon, Brian Dempsey, Joe Arsenault, Harold Cameron, Albert O’neill, Frank Kerr. Also predecease­d by daughterin-law, Elizabeth Moar and sonin-law, Garry Macdonald. A faithful parishione­r of St. Paul’s Church, and lifelong resident of Herring Cove, he was a licensed fisherman until the age of 75 years. He was also employed at the HMC Dockyard for 10 years, a deckhand for the Atlantic Pilotage Authority for 10 years and at times a freight handler on the Halifax waterfront with a 25 year union membership. A true gentleman, he will be remembered for his kindness, humility, generosity and love towards family, friends and many acquaintan­ces. Many thanks to Dr. Irwin, Northwood Homecare and the VON.
