-

Passed away May 2, 2020 from stage 4 cancer at his home in Herring Cove at the age of 82. Ron worked at The Halifax Chronicle Herald as a Pressman until his retirement 25 years ago. In his younger years, he loved fishing and hunting at his camp on Lake Frederick. He built rowboats and was very proud of his home, which he built himself at the age of 23 in 1962. Over the years, he would walk the neighbourhood, always interested in the changes in the area and chatting with people he knew and those he was just meeting. He was a past volunteer fireman with the Herring Cove Fire Department and went to many of the area meetings, being interested in politics and developments in Herring Cove. Once retired, he started gardening, growing many types of vegetables. He also enjoyed his morning crib games with his wife, Barb. He was born in Halifax to the late Ervin and Gladys (Pope) Harnish. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara (Gallant) Harnish; daughter, Christine (Kevin) Gray, Herring Cove; grandsons Tyler (Danielle) Gray, Prince George, B.C.; and Michael (Natasha) Gray, Sackville; great-grandchildren, Addison and Jaxson; his brother, Reginald (Rose), Herring Cove; sisters, June (Werner) Niederstrasser, Boutiliers Point; Dorothy (Reg) Gibson, Herring Cove; and Diane (Tom) Mackinnon, Spryfield; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Ervin and Gladys (Pope) Harnish; daughter, Michele; sister, Joyce Majcan; and niece, Janet Mayhew. Cremation has taken place under the care of J.A. Walker Funeral Home, Spryfield. Due to Covid-19, there will be a family-only burial service. Thank you Nicole Phinney, Devon Hennigar, Dr. Dempster, the excellent care from the VON and a special thank you to Dr. Gubitz who was with him at the end. Donations can be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses.
