HALFPENNY, Owen James

Age 81, of Sand Point, passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer. His son, Owen Jr., was at his side. Owen was born on November 12, 1938, to the late Walter and Neta (Somers) Halfpenny. He was employed by Stora Forest Industries (Point Tupper) in the maintenanc­e department for 36 years before retiring in 1997. Owen was a member of the Seven Communitie­s Volunteer Fire Department and Sand Point Wharf Associatio­n. He was a proud lobster fisherman and lived for the sea. Owen enjoyed a good game of cards, a feed of lobster, and a laugh with friends and family. He was always willing to do anything for anybody, and his infectious smile will be remembered by all who knew him. Owen will be sadly missed by his wife, Mary (Jellow); his children, Owen Jr. (Bobbi Lee) of Hampton, N.B.; and Anita of Belleville, Ont.; grandchild­ren, Courtney, Mitchell, Zach, Luke, and Terry; great-grandchild­ren, Greyson, Autumn, Ryder, Maddox, Raiden, Haylan, and Ryker; sister, Geraldine (Halfpenny) Franklin of Halifax; Aunt, Jean Matheson, Reserve Mines; brother-in-laws, Joe (Bubsy) Jellow of Auld’s Cove; Lawrence (Sharon) Jellow of North Sydney; Walter (Cathy) Jellow of Florence; and sister-in-law, Cecilia (Bubbles) Leblanc (Mark) of Dalem Lake; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; life long friend and best buddy, Earlie Peeples of Mulgrave; the fishermen at Sand Point Wharf; David Myers of Steep Creek; and his faithful sidekick, Willie. Predecease­d by his parents, Walter and Neta Halfpenny, and many brothers and sisters-in-law. The family would like to thank Dr. Gallant for being his trusted general practition­er for 20 years, and Laurie who always made his visits brighter. Dr. Cooper, the staff of the palliative care unit of St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish, and the palliative care nurses from Guysboroug­h for the excellent care he received. A special thank you to Shelly for providing much needed guidance and support throughout this challengin­g time. Due to COVID-19, a celebratio­n of life will be held at a later date.
