HAMILTON (Stevens), Mary Ruth

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Ruth (Stevens) Hamilton, at 87 years of age, on May 2, 2020 at home with her loving daughter and son-in-law by her side. Born in Toronto, Ont., on November 9, 1932, she was a daughter of the latethomas Eric Stevens and Margaretta Emily (Bagshaw) Stevens. Besides her parents, she was predecease­d by her loving husband of almost 58 years, George William Hamilton; sister, Dorothy Hellebust; and great-granddaugh­ter, Macali Cormier. She is survived by daughters, Leah Ann Hamilton and Beth Lorraine (Roland) Hannem; brothers, James (Karin) Stevens and John (Judy) Stevens; Grandma to Laura Fevens (Troy Sloan), Christina Fevens, Jocelyn Leblanc (Sarah Kelly) and Allison Leblanc and proud Greatgrand­ma to Nate, Hayden, Tessa and Matthew. The family would like to thank her friend, Ruth Freeman, with whom she shared a lot of laughs, drives and lunches. Mary was an active member of Pleasant Lake Baptist Church, where she played piano for over 50 years until recently when church gatherings were stopped due to Covid 19. She was very active in the Women’s Missionary Society and loved her Bible Study group. Mary was a proud founding member of YACRO and also volunteere­d at the Teachers Center for many years. She was a schoolteac­her by vocation and taught in locations in Ontario, Northern Quebec, Northwest Territorie­s and Nova Scotia. She took great pride in her flower gardens and enjoyed spending every summer at the cottage with her husband where she would swim at least once every day. She loved dogs and in recent years, her poodle, Sophie, was her constant companion. Funeral arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematoriu­m, Yarmouth. A private Celebratio­n of Mary’s life will take place Friday, May 8th in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Moses Officiatin­g. This service will be viewable via webcast on Sweeny’s Funeral Home website. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Pubnico. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made to the Kaye Nickerson Centre or the Special Olympics (Yarmouth).
