MUNTZ, Alfred "Philip"
It is with great sadness that the family of Alfred "Philip" Muntz, age 91, announce his death. Philip passed away peacefully in Foyer Pere Fiset in Cheticamp, on April 21, 2020. He was a kind, caring man, who will be deeply missed by his friends and family. Born in Green Pond, N.J., he completed his under graduate studies at Rutgers University. Philip went on to obtain graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin, where he met and married the love of his life, Clarice Sharpee. A recognized geographer/cartographer (former Head of the Cartographic Archive Division at the National Archives in Washington, DC), he chose mid life, to pursue his dream of going "back to the land". In 1972, he and his family, moved to a small farm near Annapolis Royal. For more than 20 years he worked the land and woods at Lake La Rose. Philip was a man of many talents and interests. He was a voracious reader, a talented gardener, and a keen naturalist, who was a staunch advocate for the environment. Ever a community supporter, he presided on numerous volunteer boards and participated in several local development projects. His avid appreciation for both local and national art and culture was prevalent throughout his life as well. Philip was also known for his quick wit, and love of meaningful discussions. His family will remember with fondness, the many hikes where wonderful conversations were shared. He was, however, at his happiest, when he was in his gardens, with his beloved wife Clarice by his side. Philip was a son of the late Rheinhold Constantine and Wanda (Pyde) Muntz. He was predeceased by his wife, Clarice, and his brothers, John (Mary Anna), Henry (Sophie), Frederick (June) and Alexander (Anne). He is survived by his daughter, Kristin; his son, Erich; his grandchildren, Alex and Laura, and many nieces and nephews. We, the family of Philip Muntz, would like to express our deepest gratitude to the staff of Foyer Pere Fiset, and to Dr. Michel Chiasson. Thank you for the wonderful care he received as a resident there. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Adopt a Stream Program (Nova Scotia), or to The David Suzuki Foundation. A Celebration of Philip’s life will be held at a later date.
