Nova Scotians with lung health issues counting on us

- ROBERT MACDONALD Robert Macdonald is president & CEO of the Lung Association of Nova Scotia.

As COVID-19, a respiratory virus, continues to affect our families, our workplaces and our day-to-day lives, I recognize that we are getting restless and wanting life to return to the way it was. However, it is now more important than ever, to continue following the guidelines set out by the province and Department of Health, who have shown tremendous leadership during these uncertain times. As much as we are all feeling unsure about the days ahead, we must not become complacent.

Each day at the Lung Association of Nova Scotia, we interact and advocate for those Nova Scotians who already know what it’s like to have breathing difficulties. This includes Nova Scotians dealing with COPD, asthma, sleep apnea, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, cystic fibrosis and more. Coping with lung health issues can be difficult at the best of times, and a virus that is respiratory in nature only increases potential complications.

We are so appreciative of the frontline health-care workers who are risking their own health, and sometimes the health of their families, in order to provide the urgent medical care that is required.

From a lung health perspective, we have always known the importance of our respirologists and respiratory therapists within the system. They are now more important than ever. We can, and must, thank them by remaining diligent.

As our province struggles with the tragedies that have recently befallen us, I want to hug and hold my loved ones more than ever. I’m sure most Nova Scotians are feeling the same way. However, we must stay united by making the necessary sacrifices now, for the greater good of our province.

As hard as it may be, Nova Scotians are showing how strong we are. Let’s continue to be strong, knowing we’ll be able to safely hug our loved ones sooner.
