ROBBEN, Jacob

Age 95, Crowes Mills, passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2020 surrounded by family. Jacob was born on January 10, 1925 in Holland. Papa was a proud veteran who fought for Holland in Indonesia during the Second World War. After the war, he immigrated to Nova Scotia with his family, settling in Elmsdale and eventually Crowe’s Mills where he once owned a working farm. Papa also worked for Camp Debert, Kent Homes and the Cheese Factory. He enjoyed working on his blueberry land, growing mountains of beans in his garden and feeding the birds, who would eat from his hand. He was also a founding member of the Onslow Belmont Fire Brigade. Jacob is survived by his wife, Shirley, Wynn Park Villa; sons, Peter (Rose Johnson), Yopie (Darlene), John (Lois Walker) and daughter, Ali Chapman (Calvin). He is also survived by stepdaught­ers, Ellen Maccallum (Elmer), Susan Robben and stepsons, Terry Crowell (Kathy) and Darren Crowell (Joanne). Papa was a proud grandfathe­r to Laura Robben (Todd Kennedy), Andrea Robben, Amy Robben, Rebecca Robben (Phil Walters), Melissa Howell (Katie Shannon), Jantje Chapman, Lawney Chapman (Katie), Austin Chapman, Brittany Robben, Morganne Robben and Alexander Robben. He is also survived by step grandchild­ren, Raeleigh Walker, Tom Chapman, Shawn Johnson (Natalie), Stacey Johnson (Mike Davidson), Sara Turner (Simon), Tony Walsh, Derrick Maccallum, Lorie Mccarthy (Derek) and Sheryl Clarke (Brian), Corey Crowell, Emily Crowell, Jenna Crowell (Jeffery) and Brandon Crowell (Alcia). Jacob was also a proud papa to 22 great-grandchild­ren and his faithful canine companion of many years, "Lucky." Jacob was preceded in death by his first wife, Jantje; brothers, Jan and Bert and a daughter in infancy. The family would like to offer special thanks to VON nurses and home support workers for their excellent care. Thanks to Dr. Henderson and nurse, Angela who helped us get through the last hours of Papa’s life. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Belmont Crossroads Cemetery. Arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Onslow Belmont Fire Brigade or charity of choice.
