UPSHAW, Evelina Gloria
Daughter of the late Edith (States) Atkinson and Howard Atkinson was born in Windsor, and passed away peacefully on May 8, 2020 in the Northwood Home Care Facility in Halifax. Evelina’s thoughtfulness, compassion and her love for children touched the lives of many. She was considered "Hero of the Community" because of her big heart and her willingness to help anyone in need. She received numerous accolades from the Municipality, Province, and was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Award Medal to name a few. Evelina worked at Camp Hill Hospital for several years until she left to help set up Cornwallis Street Baptist (New Horizons) Church’s Hot Lunch Program where she devoted 33 years to helping community children in need. Upon retiring from the Hot Lunch Program, she volunteered at the Mulgrave Park Tenant’s Association to help run the Breakfast Program and assisted with their Food Bank. Evelina professed her faith in Jesus Christ; she was a dedicated member of Cornwallis Street Baptist Church (New Horizons) for 75 years. Evelina was a Godfearing woman and was passionate about helping children through out Halifax Regional Municipality. She sat on several church committees: Women’s Missionary Society; Ladies Auxiliary; Board of Management; Treasurer, Choir, Hospital Visitor, A.U.B.A, and many more. Evelina had 15 children with six surviving, including the first Black set of triplets born in Nova Scotia. Evelina’s life will be forever cherished in the lives of her children. Survived by her children, Myles Upshaw, Darcelle Upshaw, Ontario; Rosalind Upshaw, Derek Upshaw, Debi Upshaw, and Darlene Upshawtynes (Quentin) all of Halifax; 12 grandchildren, 26 greatgrandchildren and four greatgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Florence, Shay and Claudia; brothers, Martin, Claude (Vickie), Ronald all of Ontario. She was predeceased by husband, Avery Upshaw; brothers, Glen, Joseph, Howard; sisters, Gladys, Edna, Francis, Ethel; grandson, Deangelo. There will be a small virtual service at Atlantic Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 19th at 1 p.m. http://distantlink.com/ dlm62.html password Arbor2020.
