Trucker dies in workplace accident in Goodwood

-

The Nova Scotia Labour Department is investigating a workplace death in Exhibition Park on Tuesday.

A department spokeswoman didn't provide an interview but said in an email that the death involved a truck and occurred at 19 Mills Dr. in Goodwood.

“The truck in question has been taken out of service as part of the investigation,” said Carley Sampson. “We have no further information to share at this time, as our investigation is ongoing.”

The Chronicle Herald called the business listed at 19 Mills Dr., which is MJ Total Transport and Rigging. The company's human resources and safety manager, Stephen England, said he couldn't comment on what happened because of the provincial investigation. He said there was also a federal investigation underway.

Earlier the RCMP and the company told CBC Nova Scotia that a 57-year-old man from Hatchett Lake who worked for another trucking business was killed while on site to pick up a load of goods.

An RCMP spokeswoman wouldn't provide any information to the Chronicle Herald because criminality had been ruled out and the investigation had been taken over by the Labour Department.

Laken Maclean expressed condolences on the death of the man, whose first name is Greg, on Facebook.

In a Facebook message to the Herald, Maclean said the man was a good customer of her business North East Truck & Trailer.

“We didn't know him personally as much — we know he lost his wife a couple years ago,” she said. “He was a very respected individual in the trucking industry and would do anything for anyone. He died doing what he loves.”
