SHATFORD, Robert Edward

-

Age 94, of Indian Harbour, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2020. Survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Evelyn (Mcrae); children, Robert Lee, Perry (Heather), Susan (Graham), Wanda (Edward), and Rosalie (Chris); grandsons, Alexander, Matthew and Jordan; sister, Shirley (Maurice); brothers-inlaw, Ralph, Harold, Lloyd (Barb). Predeceased by father, Borden Raglan Shatford; mother, Mable Gertrude (Manuel); sister, Thelma, in infancy; brother-inlaw, Richard, sisters-in-law, Elizabeth and Margaret. Robert started working as a fisherman with Albert Morash, who was a big influence in his early life. After leaving the industry he would still help the local fishermen by either mending their nets in the basement or filleting fish in his fish store. He then started working on the Halifax waterfront as a freight handler for over 35 years, carpooling many a worker back and forth. He was a dedicated member of the Seabright Cribbage League for over 40 years, winning numerous trophies and playing with all his daughters over the years. He would never refuse a card game, anywhere, anytime, and with anyone. It was a regular occurrence on a Sunday with family and he taught us all how to play and be competitive. He taught mom to play crib after he retired, and they played every night together for many years. He was even known to give up his lunch hour at work to play with the gang. Robert would strike up a conversation with anyone wherever he was. He had an impeccable work ethic that he passed on to all his children, never was he known to be late, and always giving 110% to everything he did. For at least one season in particular he would tend to his mackerel nets alone before going in to work on the waterfront for 8 a.m. He taught us all to reuse and recycle before it was a thing. He will be greatly missed by us all. Donations in his memory can be made to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Indian Harbour. Due to current restrictions there will be no visitation and a private graveside service has been held in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Hackett’s Cove. Online condolences can be made to: www.rawalker.ca
