MILLER, Alice Marie

-

(1920 - 2020). A life welllived, Alice Marie Miller passed away on December 9th at age 100. Alice resided in Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home during her final years. Her deep faith prepared her well for her final journey. Alice Marie (Pribyl) was born and raised in Jackson, Minn., the youngest daughter of the late Joseph and Laura Pribyl. Alice was her high school valedictorian and graduated from Twin Cities Business College. While there, she met her future husband, Waltermiller, and they married in 1941. The family moved frequently during their early married years and made a final move to Canada in 1965. Their destination was New Glasgow, to oversee and manage the construction of Scott Paper Mill. Alice was a highly capable woman and her ability to contribute to church and community began to flourish in New Glasgow. Among her many accomplishments, she took on the role of superintendent of Trinity Church Sunday school and started a youth leadership program for teens. Alice always felt a special affinity for young people. As well, she participated in numerous other church and community organizations. Upon retirement, Alice and Walter moved to Halifax in 1982 to be closer to their family. Not ready to slow down, Alice immediately became involved in Bethany United Church. While at Bethany, Alice chaired the flower committee for 20 years. Alice also was involved in the original organizing effort to establish Adsum House for women and served faithfully on its board for many years. She also became involved in the Learning Disabilities Association of Nova Scotia, where she served on the board as a member and later as chairperson. Alice never hesitated to take on a worthwhile cause, whether it was an organization or an individual. She believed that God guided her to help out in any way that she could. She had a special skill to lead, organize, and motivate the people around her and never asked more of others than she was prepared to give herself. Alice was the last surviving member of the seven siblings. Alice Marie is survived by her daughter, Ann Kyle; her son, Lee (Dawne); and her daughter-inlaw, Melanie Mann. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Geoff Kyle, Adamand Benmiller, Kirby and Jane Miller. She was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1996; and by her son, Mark in 2020. Due to current circumstances, there will be no visitation or funeral at the present time. A memorial service will be held at a later date. If desired, donations may be made in Alice’s memory to Learning Disabilities Association of Nova Scotia. The family would like to thank all the care providers at Oakwood Terrace for their excellent care and affection for our mother over the past five years. Our mom’s motto was "Bloom where you’re planted". She certainly did that all of her life, even in her final years at Oakwood. Alice touched many lives and we are all better for knowing her.
