Harold George Pheeney

-

Age 83, of Middleton, passed away Friday, February 12, 2021, in Mountain Lea Lodge with his son by his side. Born in Bridgewater, he was the son of the late Harold Henry and Nellie Grace (Conrad) Pheeney. Harold grew up and was educated in Halifax. He attended St. Pats H.S. and went on to St. Mary’s University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (BSC). He then subsequently obtained a BSC in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. While at TUNS Harold met his future wife and they were married while he was completing his degree. After graduation and the birth of his son, the now family of three, moved to New Brunswick where he started his 30+ year career with the New Brunswick Power Commission. Harold joined NB Power as an Efficiency Engineer at Fredericton Head Office. After a short stint, he was transferred to the Courtney Bay Power Plant in Saint John as a Plant Engineer. In 1968 he and the family moved to Dalhousie, where he took the role of Area Generation Manager at the newly completed Dalhousie Generating Station. In 1974, he was asked to lead up the implementation group for new Nuclear Generation group, which then evolved into a position of Production Manager at the new Point Lepreau Nuclear Power Station. Over the years, Harold often said that this position was his favorite, as it was equally rewarding and challenging. In 1987, he moved back to Head Office to become the Director of Engineering. Subsequently, Harold held the positions of Vice-president- Plant Operations and General Manager-plan Operations, till his retirement in 1993.

As a youth Harold was known as "Sonny", and while this may not have been universally the case as an adult, he did greatly enjoy all manners of activities and various social events over the years. Harold loved basketball, he played throughout grade school and then as a member of the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Harold had a lifelong passion for Golf and especially enjoyed the times spent with the many friends he made on the links. From annual trips to Myrtle Beach, to weekly golf at local clubs, all were cherished. He also enjoyed candlestick bowling, curling, and sailing.

With both kids in competitive swimming, he was often up at 5 a.m. to drive them to early swim practice before work. As weekends were often spent away at swim meets, it seemed natural to begin participating in swimming activities as an official. Ultimately this led to both he and Mary Jane becoming Master Officials, with both Swimming New Brunswick and Swim Canada.

Harold and Mary Jane enjoyed traveling in all forms. From sailing the Bay of Chaleur and trips around N.S., to cruises to Panama, Alaska and Caribbean or trips to Europe, Japan and China, they both so loved exploring the back roads and experiencing the customs of all their local and foreign destinations. In 2004, Harold and Mary Jane returned to Middleton. Here, summertime was enjoyed at Trout Lake swimming, canoeing, and playing crib, with kids and grandkids, He loved working in his gardens. He participated in various community events from organizing bridge events, to serving on the board of the Middleton Macdonald Museum, to volunteering with Meals on Wheels.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane; and his sister, Mary June (Pheeney) Ferguson. He is survived by his son, Greg (Lynn) Pheeney, Halifax; daughter, Kathie (Brad) Mcmorran, Calgary, Alta; grandchildren, Harrison Pheeney, Alexander Pheeney, Laura Mcmorran and Thomas Mcmorran.
