GIFFIN, Michael Andrew

-

With broken hearts we write that Michael Andrew Giffin passed away suddenly on February 28, 2021. Michael was born in Halifax on September 11, 1984. He was a dear son to Ann Giffin and stepson to David Farwell. He was a big brother to Jordan and David Giffin. They adored each other. Michael loved being with his brothers. He was a tall, big man who still had a little boy way about him that melted everyone’s heart, especially his mother’s. Michael was kind, caring and generous. He could also be stubborn. He had a wide, beautiful smile that let you know he had a big gentle heart. Michael enjoyed eating. Lobster and fudge topped his list as food favourites. He had a quick wit, a deep laugh, and never hesitated to share his opinion even though he may not have been asked for it! Often his sentences would open with "Did you hear about" .... or "What do you think about" .... and you knew you were in for an interesting opinion or tale. His mom would tell him that he drove too fast, but he would claim he was simply "keeping up with traffic." He was always keen to be on the golf course. Michael had recently taken up gardening and was proud of his planting handiwork. He enjoyed sailing in Mahone Bay and travelling to new places. He had a special fondness for Cape Cod, Mass. where he had many special memories of his family vacations. Michael and his mom would talk about returning to Cape Cod for a family trip. Michael began delivering newspapers at age 10. In his early teenage years, he worked as a basketball referee and baseball umpire. He was also a certified soccer referee, but having never played the sport, he quickly decided it was not for him and stayed with basketball and baseball. At age 15, Michael earned the award of Queen’s Scout. Michael took up running in his teens and competed in local road races and twice in the annual Falmouth Road Race, Massachusetts. His goal was to take up running again and return to Falmouth with his Mom, Dave, Jordan and David and run the race as a family. Out of high school, Michael decided he wanted to be a pilot and obtained his single engine pilot’s license. Because of his interest in flying, he began working for Air Canada at age 21. He was currently working at Air Canada as a Lead Station Attendant. Michael had many friends and people who knew Michael thought highly of him. His friends and peers at Air Canada had great respect for Michael. He will be missed by them. Michael will be with his Papa, Charlie Giffin, who died in April 2000. Papa was more than a grandfather to Michael. In Michael’s own words "I love my Grandfather dearly. He helped raise me well." Michael will also be with his uncle Mike who died in April 2019. He credited Uncle Mike in showing him ways to succeed in life. Michael is survived by his loving grandmother, Catherine Giffin, who was always an important part of his life. Michael’s dear great Uncle Ron and great Aunt Noreen played a large role in his early upbringing. To Ron he was known as "big shot." Michael will be lovingly remembered by his Uncle Charles (Janice), cousins, Leigh and Michele. Michael had many great aunts and uncles, and extended family who will miss him.
