MCPHAIL, Susan Marie

-

Age 63 of Leduc, Alta. Passed away peacefully in Leduc Community Hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Sue was born in Halifax and raised in Oldham, N.S., and was very proud of her Oldham roots and often referred to herself as being “an Oldhammer!” Sue had always been a trailblazer and when she set her mind to something, nothing was going to stop her. She excelled at a variety of sports such as basketball and was often voted MVP. She also competed in Nationals for both badminton and women’s softball. She worked at a variety of jobs, from serving gumbo at a restaurant in Mobile, Alabama, to working on a woodpile, loading luggage at the airport, owning her own food catering truck and taking care of adults with special needs. She was also one of the first female Zamboni drivers in Nova Scotia. She decided at the age of 40 to go back to school. She attained her red seal as a pipefitter and was eventually hired by Suncrude Canada in Fort Mcmurray, Alta. Sue was extremely proud to have gotten her dream job and gained a group of co-workers that she considered family. She enjoyed travelling and exploring new places. San Francisco was her favorite trip, touring Alcatraz, and attending a 49er’s game and tailgate party. She will be deeply missed by her wife, Angella Babineau; sons, Josh (Rebecca) Dowding, Chayne (Sinead) Dowding; grandchildren, Sephora and Caleb; sister, Sandy (Valerie); brother, Smitty; and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Ken and Shirley; and sister, Kathy. She will also be missed by her two cats which she fondly referred to as “her puppies”. Special thanks goes to Dr. Steed and her colleagues at the Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton; and the many doctors and nurses at the Northern Lights Health Centre, Fort Mcmurray. Memorial will take place at a later date.
