Settling on the right location was essential for the veterinarians behind a new Halifax pet clinic.

North End Animal Hospital, independently owned by

Dr. Courtney Sherlock and Dr. Crystal Craig, is open at 2850 Isleville St.

“The location, on the corner of Isleville and Bilby, was chosen because we were looking to be central on the peninsula, easily accessible by all areas, and also wanted to be in a very family-friendly, community-based neighbourhood. So this area was perfect,” Sherlock said.

This is the fourth location for the pair. They began looking at an animal hospital in the north end of Halifax two years ago when they started seeing more clients driving out to their Eastern

Passage Village Veterinary Hospital and East Hants Animal Hospital. When they opened the Bedford Parks Animal Hospital in March, they saw more Halifax clients.

“The pandemic and pet boom has created more need for veterinary services in most places in our country,” said Sherlock.

“As we are a full-service small-animal hospital, we provide all medical, surgical, emergency and dental care to cats and dogs. Our hospital has four exam rooms, separate surgery and dental suites, and separate dog and cat wards. We have a full onsite lab, as well as digital X-ray and digital dental X-ray.”

A unique feature is a separate private entrance that can be used by clients before or after an emotional appointment or if a pet is nervous and doesn't want to see other animals.

“In terms of team culture, our industry is sadly plagued with extreme levels of mental health issues. The veterinary community has four times higher suicide rates than other industries. This means having a happy, welcoming and open work environment is essential.” Sherlock said.

“Our team is family, and we foster an environment for open communication, peer support and fun.”

The facility will soon be offering 24-7 cat boarding utilizing private cat suites with built-in screens so guests can watch cat TV and cameras so owners can log in and see their pets while they are away.

North End Animal Hospital is open Monday through Saturday.
