Remnants of Ida headed our way

- JOHN MCPHEE THE CHRONICLE HERALD jmcphee@herald.ca @Halijohnmcphee

The remnants of hurricane Ida will bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Nova Scotia beginning Thursday and into the weekend.

The track and duration of the storm will be affected by a strong high system over northern Quebec, said Saltwire meteorologist Cindy Day.

It's expected that high system will steer the storm toward the southwest corner of Nova Scotia by Thursday evening and along the Atlantic coast toward the Eastern Shore.

A narrow band of heavy rain will veer toward the Bay of Fundy and northern Nova Scotia with some areas receiving about 75 millimetres.

“What people will find interesting as the system blows through is how long the wind is with us,” Day said.

“It's really going to be quite windy all day Friday and most of the day Saturday with really high wind gusts because that system is being stalled and then that high is pushing down from the north. Systems often blow through and all of a sudden you have this calm after a tropical system (but) because of the positioning of the other systems around it, there's going to be a lot of wind into the early part of the weekend, Saturday and even into Sunday for eastern regions.”

Wind gusts from the north/northwest could reach 90 kilometres per hour along the Atlantic coast and closer to 60 km/h inland.

Ida slammed into Louisiana on Sunday as the first Category 4 hurricane of the season. On Tuesday it was moving over the Tennessee Valley as a tropical depression and by Thursday morning it's expected to be off Long Island.

“Because the system was very powerful, it has a lot of moisture, it's going to move over very warm sea surface temperatures."

While there's no need to panic, Day said "there's going to be a lot of energy in the system."
