HERRON, William
Age 99 of River John, passed away August 30, 2021 in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. Born in Keady, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, he was a son of the late Stewart and Margaret (Haffey) Herron. As a 17 year old at the beginning of the Second World War, he was unable to enlist into active service due to having contracted polio but served in the Home Defense in “Churchill’s Secret Army” until the end of the war. He emigrated to Canada after living in New Zealand. After moving to Canada, he met Olive Douglas, who would become his wife. Together they operated their farm while she taught school and he worked at carpentry. He enjoyed attending dances and was a member of St. George’s Presbyterian Church. William is survived by sisters-in-law, Maude and Rena and was known as “Uncle Bill” to his surviving nieces and nephews, Ann, twins, Isabel and Samuel, Jennifer, Willie, Lynda, Vera, Rae, Stuart, Kevin, Betty, Bonnie and Jeanne. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Olive; sisters, Jean and Isabel, and his twin sister, Lilly; brothers, James, Samuel, Thomas and Stewart; nephew, George. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 2nd in St. George’s Presbyterian Church in River John, Rev. Larry Walsh officiating. Due to limited seating, preference will be given to family members and invited guests. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.
