SYDNEY — A 22-year-old Cape Breton man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 77-year-old New Haven man.

Brian Coady Rose, 22, of New Haven, made a brief appearance in Port Hawkesbury provincial court Thursday by video from the Cape Breton Correctional Centre.

Rose was scheduled for a show cause hearing but he was remanded and the hearing was put over to Sept. 7 at 9:30 a.m. in Sydney Supreme Court.

On Thursday, a rumour was rampant in New Haven that a woman had also been arrested. Nova Scotia RCMP Cpl. Chris Marshall said that wasn't true.

“He was the only one arrested, the only one being charged and we're not looking for any more suspects in connection with this,” he said.

Marshall said they are not releasing the name of the victim out of respect for the family.

THE INVESTIGATION

At around 9:05 p.m. Monday, Ingonish Beach RCMP responded to a report of a sudden death at a residence on New Haven Road in New Haven.

New Haven is a village in northern Cape Breton situated northeast of Neils Harbour, about 165 kilometres from Sydney.

On Tuesday, RCMP announced they were investigating a suspicious death of a 77-year-old man.

RCMP had also said there wasn't a reason for the community to be concerned, describing it as "an isolated incident."

On Wednesday, RCMP confirmed they had arrested a suspect in conjunction with the homicide who would be appearing in court Thursday.

On Thursday, Marshall said even with the arrest, the RCMP is still in the community.

The investigation is continuing by the RCMP Northeast Nova major crime unit with assistance from the Victoria County District RCMP.

“The investigation doesn't stop just because we have someone charged,” he added.

The Northeast Nova major crime unit is asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact them at 902-896-5060 or anonymously through Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), a secure web tip at www. crimestoppers.ns.ca or by way of the P3 Tips App.
