BERRIGAN (Charlton), Cheryl Marie
Cheryl passed away peacefully on August 30, 2021, at the age of 68, with her family by her side. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Mary Charlton (Perry). Cheryl was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. As was said at her wedding toast she had all the qualities of a wonderful woman. She was known for her kind smile and big heart. After graduating from Mount Saint Vincent University with her Education Degree in 1973, she lived in Moncton, N.B., for a couple years before moving to Cole Harbour and starting a preschool. She ran the preschool for many years making lifelong connections with parents and children of Colby Village. Her house rule was, there is always room for one more. Over the years, she was a second mom to so many, especially Amanda Anderson and Chris Noel. In the rare quiet moments at the house, Cheryl enjoyed painting oil based landscapes that were given as gifts to people all over. Cheryl was kind and always willing to help. She gave time back to many volunteer organizations over the years including teaching Sunday School at Pope John XXIII Church and her time with the QEII Open Heart Surgery Recovery Team guiding patients through their recovery process. Cheryl was in her element when hosting her children, their spouses, and her 16 grandchildren. She loved the holidays and celebrated with fun traditions that her grandchildren looked forward to every year. She never missed a birthday to “give a pinch to grow an inch” and enjoyed games of crib at the Land. All the grandchildren knew they were loved and were an important part of “Nanny’s” life. She is survived by her soulmate and husband of 48 years, Frank; and their children, Krista Gordon (John), Margo Macphee (Andrew), Jennifer Fleming (Geoff), Kevin Berrigan (Emily), Brian Berrigan (Murray Countway) and Heather Berrigan (Jonathan Towers); grandchildren, Emily, Owen, Jacob, Kyle, Rene, Thomas, Noah, Josh, Julia, Casey, Katelyn, Alexis, Ryan, Isaac, Kira, Sydney and 18th grandchild on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Trish Poole; and brother, Tommy Charlton (Carol). She will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews; and our extended family, the Banks and Noels; many cherished friends, especially Shauna Banks and Patsy Cahill. Besides Cheryl’s parents she was predeceased by grandson, William; in-laws, John “Biff” Berrigan and Elizabeth Berrigan (Penny); uncle, Bob Charlton; brothers-in-law, George Poole, Bruce “Spin” Sponagle, Ralph Berrigan, Emmett Berrigan; sister-inlaw, Mary Sponagle. There will be no visitation at this time. A celebration of Cheryl’s life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the Nurses and Staff of 5E in Dartmouth General Hospital for their kindness to Cheryl and our family. Memorial donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation or Diabetes Canada.
