ARMSTRONG (Fougere), Mary Rita

-

1923-2021. Our family are very sad to announce that in her 99th year, our dear mother Mary Rita (Fougere) Armstrong, passed away on December 31st, at her home in Fredericton, N.B., surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Larry’s River, to her parents, the late Margaret (Doiron) and Charles Fougere, and was the second oldest of nine children. At three months old Mary’s family moved to New Glasgow, where Mary grew up and eventually worked at Scottish Woolen Mills making Army Blankets and Woolworths. Following the war, the family moved to Truro, where she also worked at Woolworths ending up as the office manager, then Mary met and married her late husband, Basil Armstrong, whose army career took them to several postings in different areas including Halifax, Iserlohn Germany, Petawawa Ont., Gagetown, N.B., Valcartier Que., and St. Margaret’s, N.B. In 1974 the family moved to Fredericton, N.B. With several moves and a young family, Mary excelled at being a stay-athome mom where she nurtured and molded her children into what they are today. Mary was a long-time member of St. Dunstan’s CWL serving many years as a telephone convener. Mary leaves behind her children, Charles (Elise) Armstrong of Embrun Ont.; Clarence Armstrong of Fredericton, N.B.; and Catherine Armstrong of Fredericton, N.B.; grandchildren, Camille (Nick) Armstrong of Ottawa; Jean-luc Armstrong of CFB Kingston; and Mathieu Armstrong of Ottawa; sisters, Helen Wheadon of Dartmouth; and Joan Whalley of Maple Ridge, B.C.; sisters-in-law, Olla Fougere and Della Fougere, both of Truro; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to Mary’s parents and her husband, she was predeceased by brothers, Leo (Infant), Linus (Infant), John (Infant), Charles, Raymond, and Clement; brothers-inlaw, Clifford Wheadon and Edward Whalley; and sisterin-law, Agnes Mulroney. Our heartfelt thanks to Bayshore Home Care PSW’S (too numerous to mention), Extra Mural Nurses (too numerous to mention), past and present management and staff at Kents Building Supplies, Bishops Drive, and the past and present staff at the Regent Street Medical Clinic Shoppers Drug Mart. Without everyone’s support we would not have been able to keep our mom at home. Bishops Funeral Home and Crematorium have been entrusted with the arrangements. A Funeral Mass with Father Peter Osbourn will be held in St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on Thursday, January 6th, at 2 p.m. The Mass will be live streamed.
