Cooler end to the week but a big warm-up is on the horizon

Before I get to some good news, let’s start with the weather we’re dealing with right now. A frontal boundary has lingering rain showers in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and southern New Brunswick this morning. The bulk of this will taper off and a west to east clearing trend will follow, although eastern Nova Scotia will hold onto a chance of showers.

This boundary is now working its way across Newfoundland with clouds, showers and drizzle.

A slow-moving low associated with this boundary will bring more showers and possibly wet flurries to Newfoundland Friday, with just some isolated showers of flurries in northern/eastern Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and the Acadian Shore in New Brunswick.

The upcoming weekend is looking pleasant in the Maritimes thanks to the return of a high-pressure system. Newfoundland and Labrador could see a chance of showers and flurries from stalled low-pressure Saturday, but there are finally

signs of more widespread clearing during the second half of the weekend.

A significant warm-up is also becoming more likely next week thanks to a strong

upper-level ridge that will develop in the jet stream, which could also lead to a sunny stretch for much of the region if surface high-pressure holds low-pressure to our south.

Inland locations will have the best chance of reaching the high teens or possibly the lowmid-twenties around the middle of next week, and some may even get a bit warmer. Coastal locations under the influence of onshore winds will be much cooler, however.

The strength and placement of this ridge and the position of the surface high will ultimately determine how sunny and warm it gets.

A better idea of how this will play out will be known in the coming days.
