ABBOTT, Ruth Virginia

-

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ruth Virginia Abbott on Monday, May 2, 2022, at the age of 78, in Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany. Born in Petite Riviere on July 29, 1943, she was the eldest daughter of the late Marshall and Jennie (Ramey) Sperry. She is survived by her brother, Herbert (Gail) Sperry, Petite Riviere; her sister, Irene Grace, Luneburg; brother-in-law, Michael Croft, Bridgewater; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Byron Abbot, and sisters, Ruby Lijeskic and Maurita Croft. One of her first jobs was at the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia House as a live-in maid in the 1960s, where she was adored by all who met her. She next worked at the Morse Chocolate Factory where she acquired her taste for chocolates; "one box at a time." Ruth and her sister, Ruby, moved to Toronto, Ont., where she worked for a few years. Ruth then returned to Petite Riviere in the early 1970s where she lived with her mother and helped as a caregiver to her father who had become bedridden. Later, she worked at the Wade House and Dublin House and did housekeeping for people in the area. She was also a caregiver to her mother for several years. There’s the story of her old Ford Cortina car, coming down Dufferin Hill with her mother and aunt, and losing its breaks. Saying, “hold on, Ma!” she was saved by the Big Ex parking lot. Ruth was married to Byron for 25 years until his passing in 2014. She loved cats, especially her last cat, Miss Kitty. Ruth was a permanent fixture at Rissers Beach during the summer. Known as the ‘Sun Bathing Queen,’ she was always working on her tan and swimming. Ruth enjoyed going dancing and singing gospel songs. She had a spark in her personality and put 100% into everything she did. The family would like to thank Dr. Neal Morgan for all his help over the past seven years and Rosedale Home for Special Care. Ruth is now at peace and having a good laugh with her sisters, Ruby and Maurita. There will be a private family service at a later date. Donations in Ruth’s memory can be made to SHAID Tree Animal Shelter. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where online condolences may be made by visiting: www.sweenysfuneralhome.com
