Brooklyn’s Sarah Mitton won the senior women’s shot put title at the Canadian track and field championships with the longest put in the world this year.

In Langley, B.C., on Saturday, Mitton’s final attempt landed 20.33 metres to easily win the title and better the Canadian record of 19.58 she set earlier in the season.

In the warmup, Mitton thought she had a big day in the making, but her first five efforts didn’t find the mark.

Mitton, 25, opened with a 19.13 put and followed with a 19.29 and an 18.96. She fouled on her fourth and fifth efforts before making her-career best mark.

“I knew in the warm up it could be a crazy day,” said Mitton. “I had a 20-metre warm up throw that felt effortless. So, after the first five and not quite getting it, I was hungry for it in my last attempt. I knew I needed to make it count.”

Mitton knew her last attempt was special ‘the second it left my hand.’

Her mark surpassed the season’s best of China’s Jiayuan Song’s 20.20 recorded in May.

Mitton’s record put on Saturday was almost four metres better than runner-up and former Canadian champion and record holder Brittany Crew.

Mitton heads into the world championship in Euegene, Oregon, in July on a roll.

“It’s a pretty crazy feeling,” said Mitton. “I think I just started to believe that I could be a 20-metre shotputter and it’s come so quickly after. It’s a nice confidence boost and sets me up nicely heading into world champs.”

Wolfville’s David Bambrick won the men’s para ambulatory shot with a best of 10.62 metres.
