SYDNEY — The multimillion-dollar Cape Breton Regional Hospital expansion has made the annual Top100 Projects report published by Renew Canada Magazine.

The annual report from the magazine referred to as the voice of public sector infrastructure, features the 100 largest public sector infrastructure projects currently under development in the country.

At No. 80 on this year’s list is the Cape Breton hospital expansion valued at $700 million.

Site preparation began in 2020 and the project is expected to be complete by 2028.

The Cape Breton Health Care Redevelopment project comprises of an expansion by 40 per cent of the emergency department at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney and a doubling in size of the cancer centre.

Initial project estimates were for a cost of $500 million.

Cape Breton healthcare expansion plans also include a renovation of the Glace Bay Hospital emergency department to increase space in that facility by 30 per cent.

The New Waterford Consolidated and the Northside General hospitals are to be replaced by community health centres and new long-term care facilities.

The $16 billion Site C Clean Energy Project by BC Hydro in British Columbia tops the Top100 list.

Other Nova Scotia projects on it include the $2 billion QEII new generation project at No. 37 and the $717 million Highway 104 project at No. 78.

All projects are ranked based on their confirmed project cost (capital or total contracts), and must be in active procurement, assessment, design and/or construction. The projects must also have funding support before being included in the report.

The annual Top100 Projects Report has ranked Canada’s largest infrastructure projects since 2006, based on total dollar investment.
