Truro woman to open nail studio in Truro this summer

Macquel Weatherbee always knew what she wanted to do: open a salon.

So when the “perfect” location opened for lease in Truro, she seized the opportunity to make her dream a reality.

“Since I was little I’d always loved to do nails, makeup, hair,” said Weatherbee. “That’s always been a passion of mine.”

Nestled within Truro’s downtown core, Bad and Bougie Nails will open later this summer on Prince Street. Weatherbee says she’ll be offering nail services, like pedicures and manicures, but hopes to later expand her shop by bringing in eyelash technicians and hair stylists.

Right now, though, Weatherbee is focused on getting the salon ready to open. In addition to getting paperwork finalized, she says she’s planning a COVID-19-safe grand opening. One-by-one, clients are invited to take a tour of the salon and will receive a 30 per cent discount card for their first appointment.

“I’ll definitely be posting on social media the exact date once we find out,” Weatherbee said about when her salon will be open for business.

Weatherbee graduated from Eastern Esthetics Career College in April. Since then, she’d been operating with a friend out of her home. The college was able to offer in-person classes for two days a week, so its students could gain handson experience in the field. The rest of the week was spent doing classes online.

When deciding on whether or not to open her salon amid the coronavirus pandemic, she says “sometimes you just have to take a chance.”

“I was really shocked at how quickly my clientele is already building,” she said. “I’ve been advertising on Instagram and Facebook, but that’s it - and I’m pretty happy with the outcome so far.”

Weatherbee grew up in Truro, and eventually moved to Toronto. She returned home to Nova Scotia two years ago, shortly before attending college. She wants Bad and Bougie nails to be a place where clients can go and relax, and then leave feeling great about themselves and more confident.
