Resolutions to benefit you and your pet

- LAURA GAUTHIER thewire@saltwire.com @SaltWireNetwork

This is the time of year when people make, and try to keep, New Year’s resolutions to better themselves. Some that we commonly hear include exercising more and eating healthier. This year, my resolution is to better my pet.

Now don’t get me wrong, my pet is fortunate to be well cared for, but there are always things we can do to improve.

The first resolution a pet owner can make is to improve the relationship between you and your special friend. Finding an activity that you both enjoy is a great way to do this. Some ideas include taking an obedience class together, going for a car ride or heading out for a hike. When we find ourselves having a busy day, just a quick walk around the neighbourhood would be greatly appreciated by your furry friend. By making these activities a priority, your pet is guaranteed to have a decreased chance of destructive behaviours, less boredom and the ability to maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Another resolution is to either improve or continue providing your pet with proper care. Plan an annual check-up with your veterinarian to ensure they are in good health. By doing this, there is a greater opportunity to catch any illness or underlying disease quickly, along with offering preventative measures to avoid illness.

While you’re there, consider picking up some parasite prevention to keep ticks, fleas and worms away. These things can help prolong your pet’s life, leading to more quality time together.

Finally, take the time to love your pet. When you find yourself with some extra time, play catch, cuddle on the couch or head outside with your critter. Just like people, all pets are unique and have their own ideas of a fun time. Find something you both enjoy to do together. This is the New Year’s resolution that I’m looking forward to the most as it will be just as beneficial to myself as my pet.

Now that I’ve shared my resolution ideas with you, I hope you are motivated to make your own with your furry friend. Our pets add so much joy to our lives and the love they offer us is immeasurable. I encourage you to enjoy every moment you have with them and make this the best year yet!
