Volunteers needed for federal income tax program

- CONTRIBUTED

With a new year upon us, many people are once again looking to set goals for selfimprovement, health, and well-being.

By volunteering, you can do all three at once. Volunteering has been shown to provide numerous health benefits for volunteers. It not only makes you feel good, it can improve your physical and mental health. Volunteering also provides a chance to learn new skills and hone existing ones, while getting you involved in your community.

The Canada Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) has an opportunity for you to fulfil a volunteer position. The program needs volunteers to help prepare tax returns for those in need in the community, free of charge. A collaboration between the Canada Revenue Agency and local community organizations, the CVITP opens the door to tax credits and benefits.

“You don’t have to be a tax expert and free training is provided,” says Natasha Brewer, a CVITP team leader with the Canada Revenue Agency.

“You could be helping seniors, newcomers to Canada, students, or low-income individuals. By preparing their tax returns, you help them access credits and benefits that can make all the difference in their lives. If you’re pressed for time, you can decide your schedule. Give as much or as little time as you’d like,” adds Brewer.

Brewer says there are virtual volunteer options available and you can help others from your own home.

Details on a Truro volunteer income tax clinic were not available at press time. Local organizers expect information to soon become available.
