A paw-some time to adopt, help

SPCA expects another busy spring, summer

Although people couldn’t drop in for visits, work inside SPCA shelters continued throughout the pandemic.

“It’s definitely been a challenging time for the shelters,” said Heather Woodin, director of programs and administration for the Nova Scotia SPCA. “COVID affected everyone in unique and different ways. At the beginning, visits were by appointment only and the volunteer program was shut down so proper distancing could be maintained.”

The SPCA saw an increase in demand for the pet pantry, a kitty litter and pet food bank for those who need temporary assistance.

“We have a program called Paws & Support that provides temporary homes for the pets of someone fleeing domestic violence or in hospital,” said Woodin. “The need for that increased drastically.”

The number of animals coming into the shelters dropped during the lockdown and those placed for adoption received homes quickly.

“One of the main reasons people give up their pets is because they’re moving and during COVID there was less moving,” said Woodin. “Also, during COVID, people realized the value of their pets.”

COVID-19 also affected the SPCA’s ability to raise funds, with some in-person events unable to be held. Although the Colchester branch had a Christmas table at the mall, sales were lower than some years because there were fewer people out. Because many animals come in with medical needs, continued fundraising is important so much of it moved online, with a 50-50 draw being very popular.

And assistance, of course, continues.

“We can help with surrender needs fairly quickly this time of year and animals are getting adopted quickly,” said Woodin. “If you do need help with an animal, please reach out. We are there. Don’t hesitate to call if you have questions.”

More areas of the volunteer programs are reopening and extra hands will be a big help during the spring and summer, which are busy times at shelters. Foster homes are also needed.
