Free tax service available at Truro library

-

Eligible Colchester County residents can book an income tax session at the Truro library.

As part of the Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, the library has provided space for people to have their tax returns prepared this season, free of charge.

“In the past, with COVID, we had to go to just a dropoff and pick-up (basis), but this year it’s back to the original form where you will make an appointment (and) you’ll come in and meet with someone who will do your taxes,” said Patti Miller, the adult services assistant at the Truro branch of the Colchester East Hants Public Library.

“It’s been running in the Truro branch for a number of years.”

She clarified that while the library provides the space, it’s not a library program, but a partnership with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

“It’s aimed at folks with very simple tax situations and also lower incomes,” Miller said.

“There are thresholds they have to meet. When they call to make an appointment, the volunteer will ensure that they qualify for the program. They have to determine if their income is below a certain level … You can’t run a business and use the program, for instance.”

To speak with the tax volunteers to determine eligibility and book appointments, call 902-896-4192 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Truro service runs until the end of the current tax season in late April.

Neighbouring libraries, such as the Stewiacke and Elmsdale branches, are also housing similar tax programs, Miller said.
