Honouring athletes for their talents

Brookfield embraces successes, prepares for Easter services

The Brookfield area has been extremely busy with our local athletes, coaches and teams representing their sport, school and province in a big way.

Let’s start by recognizing Malcolm Ferris on his bronze medal with Team Nova Scotia at the recent Canada Games in P.E.I. His freestyle skiing in Big Air wowed the crowd and earned him a well-deserved third-place podium finish. This was also Nova Scotia’s first medal of the Games.

We were proud to see Logan Roop on Team Nova Scotia for men’s hockey. Although Team Nova Scotia placed eighth overall, the experience and impressive talent on the ice was outstanding. Well done, Logan!

Former South Colchester High alumni (now South Colchester Academy) Lilla Roy made her seventh appearance at a Canada Games event.

She has been to both winter and summer gatherings and this time as coach for the Bluenose Nordic Skiing team. They did very well and should be so proud of their two gold (cross country skiing 2.5km classic and 5km free) and one silver (cross country skiing sprints) finishes.

Another well-known curling athlete and former SCA student, Karlee Burgess, competed in the Scotties with Jennifer Jones’ Team Manitoba in Kamloops, B.C. Burgess threw third stone and was impressive to watch. Let’s not forget Karlee’s father, Craig, who coached Team Nova Scotia men’s curlers to a gold finish at the Canada Games.

Congratulations are in order for the U15 Bantam A Elks on their northern championship 4-2 win over the Amherst Ramblers. They are a hard working team that earned this title every step of the way. There was a lot of Elk support in the stands that made this win extra special.

The SCA Wolves junior girls basketball team had a successful season. They went undefeated during the regular season and won their Division 1 district title 58-34 over Truro Middle Junior High. They then moved on to the regional championship where they placed second.

The SCA junior boys basketball team also deserves recognition for their hard work as they wrapped up their season with a second-place finish at both the district and regional levels.

Well done to both teams! As you can see Brookfield is overflowing with athletic talent these days.

As we approach the Easter season, the Brookfield Baptist Church (Pastors Steve and Amanda Bedard), in connection with Wittenburg Baptist Church (Pastor Jonathan Cann) and Lifepoint Church - formerly Stewiacke Baptist Church (Pastor Donald Dunn), will have a combined Good Friday service on April 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Wittenburg Baptist Church with Bedard leading the service. There will be communion during the service and a combined choir from all three churches will share their musical talents. Also, a fellowship after the service will be held.

On Easter Sunday, April 9, starting at 9 a.m., the Brookfield Baptist Church will host a free breakfast prior to the 11 a.m. service. What a gracious gesture and a nice way to join with your neighbours and friends to celebrate the blessing of Easter.

Knox United Church will have an Easter candle memorial during their Easter Sunday communion service on April 9 at 9:30 a.m. Names of loved ones will be read aloud during the service and printed in the bulletin. If you would like to have a candle lit in memory of a loved one email brookfieldunitedchurch@gmail.com by noon on April 4. In your email indicate who the candle is in memory of and from whom. Monetary donations for the candles can be e-transferred to knoxbrookfieldtreasurer@gmail.com or dropped at the church office or in the offering plate. This is such a special way to keep loved ones close to us.
