Local Guide group has reason to celebrate
Members of Colchester Trefoil Guild have plenty to celebrate.
During a recent gathering, the group began with a moment of silence to remember Rosemary Baas, a Girl Guide member in this area for 45 years. Baas’s family had shared Guiding memorabilia including coasters, mugs, Guide magazines, badges and pins for Colchester Trefoil Guild members to take a memento home.
The short business meeting included the reading of messages honouring the group’s day from provincial Trefoil Guild commissioners Debbie Mellish and Cindy O’Hearn and provincial Trefoil Guild commissioners Kathy DeGrasse and Darlene Duggan.
Members were eager to hear Girl Guide cookies would soon be sold by the various Guide groups in the area. The highlight of the day was the presentation of membership pins by Colchester area commissioner Jen Boyce to Jan Betts and Anne Leggett, 25 years; Joan Ellis, Caroline Blair and
Ethel MacLaughlin, 40 years; Sheila Stewart, 45 years; Jane Herring, 50 years; and Goldie Chisholm, 55 years.
Those not present because of work, confinement to nursing homes and distance were remembered and will receive their pins at a later time.
Those members are Becky Penney, 25 years; Karen Pratt, 30 years; Angela MacCleary, Donna Taylor and Joyce Custance, 35 years; Kay Mattatall, 60 years; and Mary Beckett, 65 years.
The message from O’Hearn and Mellish certainly rings true: “Today we are gathered to celebrate members of Guiding in Nova Scotia. We heard a rumour that there are 590 years of Guiding membership in this guild. This is quite the amount of experience in one group. We are certain there are so many memories and experiences that helped build this number. The friendships and sisterhood that had shaped many of us over the years is what makes Guiding great and keeps the spirit alive.”
The meeting closed with singing “Say why do we have to say goodbye, say when will we ever meet again, say where and we’ll meet you right there, say why, say when, say where.”
