‘Crucial to our ability to provide local programs’
Truro-based autism group hosting fundraising walk this weekend
A lot is happening within the local autism organization in Truro.
Autism, as defined by the National Institute of Health Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn and behave. It may be one of the most misunderstood and stereotyped neuro-divergences but those at Autism Nova Scotia are working to educate the public on it.
“Autism Nova Scotia is a community-based organization that works to build understanding, acceptance and inclusion for those on the autism spectrum and their families through leadership, advocacy, education, training and programming across the lifespan,” said Mikayla Emmerton, autism support co-ordinator for the Truro chapter of the organization.
The Truro chapter first opened in 2018 to help autistic people and their families across Colchester County and East Hants. A part-time chapter co-ordinator was hired to build community capacity, support local families and individuals with navigation, and offer programs. In 2022, this role was increased to full time to support ongoing growth and expansion in the region.
“Our local chapter creates a safer space for autistics to feel welcomed and provides a sensory-friendly space,” added Emmerton.
Programs offered in the Truro chapter enable people with autism to take part in the community, have a greater sense of belonging and fill an important gap for accessibility. Because of the chapter, autistic people can take part in activities that are readily available to their peers.
Each year, Autism Nova Scotia presents Walk YOUR Way, a fundraising event for the organization.
“This is crucial to our ability to provide local programs and services for the autistic community. It is also an opportunity to celebrate and bring the community together in an accessible and inclusive setting,” said Emmerton.
This year’s walk is June 3 starting in Victoria Park, weather permitting, with registration starting at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m. It will then be a short route within the downtown core. A variety of games, activities and a barbecue will follow.
Due to COVID-19 and hurricane Fiona, this will be the first walk in three years.
“All funds donated to the walk remain in the regions where they were raised to support local programs. This year is extra special as we have our last hoorah to celebrate Autism Nova Scotia’s 20th anniversary,” said Emmerton, adding she has high hopes for the walk and how the rest of the year will go.
“In March of this year, we moved to a new, larger space located at 339 Willow St., giving us a greater presence and visibility in the community,” said Emmerton. “We have a walk fundraising goal of $10,000.”
These funds help run programs such as Summer Camp, Teen Social Hour, Adult Chat n Chill, Healthy Relationships, Sexuality & Autism, SwimAbilities, and family events.
Those interested can register at www.walkyourwayforautism.ca as an individual or a team. Registrations will be accepted in person on the day of the event at 9 a.m. If interested in donating, go to the website under “Make a Donation” and choose to sponsor a team, walker or a walk location. They will also accept cash on the event day or contact truro@autismns.ca or 902-814-4106 if you wish to drop off a cash donation.
Until May 31, for every online donation of $25, you will receive one entry for a chance to win a prize, thanks to sponsors Carson Exports, Farnell Packaging and River Oaks Golf Club.
The club is also planning an official grand opening at the new space this summer. Stay tuned to Facebook: Autism Nova Scotia Truro Chapter for details.
