Bay Roberts recreation director Ian Flynn was recently named to the mission staff for Team Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2019 Canada Winter Games, held in Alberta. He spoke with The Compass about the opportunity.

Ian Flynn knows what it’s like to be part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s mission staff for a Canada Games, though he expects his experience this time around will be a lot colder.

The recreation director for the Town of Bay Roberts was among 15 people named to the mission staff on Monday, June 18, for the 2019 Canada Winter Games, happening in Red Deer, Alberta.

“It’s a great privilege,” Flynn told The Compass last Tuesday.

He was part of the mission staff for Team Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Working exclusively with the track and field competitors alongside coaches and managers, he was kept plenty busy.

“It’s a lot of work,” he said. “You basically wake up at 7 o’clock every morning and take on the responsibility of looking after a full team of a particular sport.”

That experience gave him a sense of the scope of the games, and Flynn found it to be educational when applied to his own work for the Town of Bay Roberts. That work includes running events and collaborating with volunteers.

He understands the Canada Winter Games is generally a smaller event than its summer counterpart. But with the town having been named host for the 2020 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, Flynn knows it will be another opportunity to learn and aid his work for the municipality.

“One-hundred per cent, I think that I’ll certainly have my eyes and ears a little more open to how things are being done behind the scene,” Flynn said, adding he appreciates having the town’s support to attend the event. “If I can bring back any aspects of that to our community to help our games run smoother in front of the curtain and behind the curtain, I’m sure will be valuable to everybody involved.”

The 2019 games take place Feb. 15-March 3.

“If I can bring back any aspects of that to our community to help our games run smoother in front of the curtain and behind the curtain, I’m sure will be valuable to everybody involved.”
